About Me

My name is Sophie Shapiro, and I am a current senior at UCLA studying theater and professional writing. As a performer since the age of 6, I have always had a passion for storytelling and creating. When I got to college, my mind was opened to various types of performance and the ways in which the arts interact closely with social change. The covid-19 pandemic provided me with an opportunity to step away from my busy performance schedule and pursue this new interest and led me to my first non-profit job with Heidi Duckler Dance. I left the company to return to school full-time with newfound skills and an ever-growing interest in the non-profit world and the ways in which the arts can change communities and the way they think. I hope to continue working in the non-profit arts sector, in addition to performing in works that I believe have a strong mission and impact. You can read more about my research and dream projects here.

Apart from my work and studies, you can find me rehearsing in the studio, going to the beach, or reading a good book (most likely re-reading The KingKiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss)! I also love to play the guitar and have the music taste of a 60 year old dad. However, most of my time is spent performing and rehearsing. At UCLA, I am very active in the student-run theater community. This past semester I had the privilege of playing my dream role Nina in The Seagull and directing my best friends in a production of Second Summer by Gregory Moss! I also embarked on the phenomenal adventure of writing a film script alongside a team of women: The Women's Project, a movie made about women, by women. You can read more about my life as a performer and view my performance resume here. I am also a camp counselor for the UCLA chapter of Camp Kesem, a national non-profit organization that provides a life-changing camp experience for children who's parents are affected by cancer. At the end of the day, I am my happiest when spending most of my time outdoors, dancing, and being with my family and friends.
